Aula sin Paredes is an educational tutoring project that aims to fill the resource gaps experienced by children living in rural and underserved communities in Puerto Rico. Aula builds on the kids’ interests, actively creating spaces of empowerment, growth, and healing.

The project began with Aula en la Montaña, a pilot program in the Rucio community of Peñuelas, bridging the resource gaps and limitations of the remote mountain environment. Adults and parents throughout the town grew considerably concerned about the education of their youth, given transportation and internet constraints. The “Saturday School” is held weekly and includes topics that supplement the children’s school attendance. Held in the open environment, the community’s children are immersed in the natural environment. The same openness is reflected in the mindsets and interactions of the students. Aula en la Montaña builds on the kids’ interests, actively creating spaces of empowerment, growth, and healing. The teachers and volunteers make space for children to be heard through their work, the development of their skills, and discussion in classes such as agroecology, nutrition, and art therapy. In times of heightened anxiety, Aula is a haven where the children have learned mindfulness and relaxation practices. Made possible by teachers, students, professors, and community leaders, the project brings together a collective team that is actively invested in the health and progress of the youth.
